Get Organized This Christmas For most of us, we are so busy living our lives that we forget how quickly Christmas is upon us.
Here is a list of 6 simple strategies to help you organize this Christmas and enjoy the holiday season.
1. Take the time to plan ahead for this Christmas.
Set aside a morning in the last week of December or the first week of November.
Get yourself a cup of coffee with a notepad and pen. Take the phone off the hook and organize the kids so you won’t be interrupted and take half an hour to make lists of the following:
(a) Presents
(b) Christmas cards
(c) Christmas decorations
2. Let’s deal with the card list first
Now that you have written your Christmas card list, when you next go shopping, buy the required amount of Christmas cards.
The next day, divide your list into 5, then write Christmas cards over the next 5 days until the list is complete. In the last week of November, post your cards.
3. Gift List
This project is a bit bigger than the previous one, but if you’re organized, it can be fun and done in a couple of weeks.
Sit down and go through the list of people you’ll be giving or sending gifts to this year.
If you have family or friends who will need their gifts mailed, put them at the top of the list because you’ll want to take care of their gifts first. (We aim to post their gifts within the next couple of weeks.)
If you buy gifts throughout the year, go through the gifts and assign them to the right people on your list. (Christmas shopping during sales is a great idea because it makes the burden a lot easier and also helps with the family budget.)
Take another look at your list, and you’ll no doubt have gotten rid of some of those names. If you have gifts that weren’t assigned to your Christmas gift box, leave them in case someone forgets or a friend drops by, and then you have something to give them.
For the remaining names, I break them down into smaller lists. Gifts to buy and gifts to give. Personally, I think that giving a gift by yourself is something special.
Now before you say… I can’t do anything have you considered a “gift basket” or “gifts in a jar”. They are so easy and simple; they look great and are always well received by the recipient.
4. With the list in hand – go shopping
This can be as easy as going to your favorite website and ordering your gifts to have them delivered to your door. Otherwise, head to your local mall and just buy the gifts on your list.
If you have decided to make your own gift baskets, here are some simple and easy suggestions.
For a family gift, make a cute Christmas-themed cookie jar. Fill it with Christmas candy or cookies! Every year when the family pulls out the Christmas cookie jar, they will think of you!
Grandparents love receiving anything that the grandchildren make. Make a video of the kids, including bath time, reading or playing school.
A few minutes over a month or two will make a fun video. How about a collage of photos of the grandchildren!
The kids can help with this project.
A coffee cup filled with coffee mix, some chocolate and a DVD.
How about a pampered gift basket for mom or sister?
5. Wrapping
Time saving tip… When you get back from shopping, wrap and label as many gifts as you can and store them away until the “big day.”
The gifts that are being posted should be wrapped and posted as soon as possible.
6. Christmas decorations
I personally hate pulling out the decorations every year and putting the tree up. But the look on my son’s face when the house and tree are decorated is worth the effort.
Every year when you put the decorations away, make sure they are working. If they aren’t, throw them away – don’t pack broken or unwanted items.
I add an item to the tree every year for my little boy. It allows us to remember what happened over the past year and spend some quality family time together.
Set aside an afternoon and make decorations with your kids, they don’t have to be expensive. I have little boxes under the tree with their handprints and a special message.
Finally enjoy Christmas. With a little planning, everyone can participate in wrapping gifts, giving gifts, and mostly, enjoying family time together.
Organize Your Christmas Shopping
Grab a notebook. Grab a pen. It’s time to get serious about Christmas shopping by making your list (and checking it twice).
Make a list of who you’re going to buy for this year. Leave a space between each person’s name.
Now go back through the list and write down gift ideas and an approximate dollar amount you’d like to spend on each person.
