How to Train Your Cat During the Holiday Season With the holidays fast approaching, there’s still plenty of time to train your cat during this festive period. Here are some tips on how to keep your tree and holiday decorations safe from your curious feline friend.

One. Start by getting some items that your cat can play with that resemble holiday decorations. Cats love bright lights and shiny objects. You may want to keep your decorations out of reach to avoid problems.

Two. Once you have some holiday-themed items for your cat, start playing with them so that your cat is more interested in these toys rather than your actual decorations. When you set up your decorations, ensure the cat has its own play area. If your cat tries to play with the decorations, firmly say no and redirect them to the approved toys.

Three. Ensure that your family doesn’t tease the cat with the decorations. This will only make them think the decorations are toys, which will undermine your training efforts.

Four. Using a clicker training device can be very effective. If you see your cat playing with the approved items, click and reward them. This helps reinforce good behavior.

Five. Now is a great time to think about holiday gifts and treats for your cat. Remember to include your feline friend in the festivities; they love presents too.

Six. Consider a cozy blanket, a special pillow, or even some catnip as holiday gifts. New training treats can also make for perfect gifts.

Seven. A new scratching post or an addition to an existing one can be a great gift. A new leash or harness might also be appreciated.

Eight. Browse online pet stores for new and different items for your pet. Wrap the gift and place it under the tree for Christmas morning; your cat will enjoy the wrapping paper and the new present.

Nine. If you have a real tree, ensure there’s plenty of water at the base and cover it so the cat doesn’t think it’s for drinking.

Ten. Make sure the gifts under the tree are not something you don’t want to be opened if the cat decides to play with them. Avoid placing ornaments low on the tree where the cat can reach them.

Eleven. If you have a fireplace mantel, ensure the items are secure, so your cat can’t knock them down if they climb up there.

Twelve. Cats don’t like having their nails and paws stuck in fabric. Using mesh ribbons and decorations can deter them from climbing the tree.

Thirteen. Make large mesh bows around the bottom of the tree to keep the cat away. Bundle the mesh and place decorations that the cat might want to play with inside the mesh.

Fourteen. Holidays are fun for both the family and your cat. Include your cat in the holiday activities and don’t forget about them. They’ll enjoy it as much as you do.

Training Your Cat at Home

Is your home truly yours, or is it your cat’s domain?

Does your cat climb curtains, chew on cords, dig in the trash, jump on counters or tables, or tear up carpets or rugs? Here are some tips for training your cat at home.

Sixteen. Curtains and drapes can be enticing for cats. Using tension rods can help. When the cat tries to climb or scratch, they will fall, creating noise that will soon deter the cat.

Seventeen. For curtains on fixed rods, tying strings around the rod will cause them to fall when the cat tries to climb. After a few attempts, the cat will leave them alone, and you can rehang them.

Eighteen. Vertical blinds are great for cats. They are usually made of plastic and are difficult for cats to climb. The cat can still peek outside without tearing everything apart.

Nineteen. Placing a bitter-tasting substance on cords or other items can help deter chewing. Cayenne pepper, bitter apple, orange peel, and lemon peels can be effective. You can also get sprays and creams from pet stores to prevent chewing.

Twenty. Ensure that putting any substance on the item your cat is chewing won’t ruin it for you. Tape like duct tape can create a mess, while gaffer tape comes in many colors and isn’t messy to use.

Twenty-One. Trash cans should have secure, tight-fitting lids. Avoid open swing-type trash cans. Use heavy lids that are hard for the cat to tip over.

Twenty-Two. Cats hate loud noises and surprises. Place items that will create noise on the counter or item your cat jumps on, like pots, empty aluminum cans with pennies inside, or foil. Cats don’t like the touch or noise of foil.

Twenty-Three. Dish soap on counters can also deter cats as it’s sticky and slippery. Don’t leave anything enticing for the cat to reach on the counters.

Twenty-Four. Tearing up the carpet is not good and can be expensive. A scratching post costs much less than replacing carpets or rugs. Place a plastic runner in areas where the cat has started scratching.

Twenty-Five. Use chemical sprays or treatments on the carpet to remove the cat’s scent. Don’t use a spray with catnip scent as it will attract them to that area.
